Residents forced to evacuate will begin to discover the extent of their property damage as they start returning home in the coming days, with the Insurance Council currently estimating the value of over 10,000 lodged claims at $124 million.
Youi’s Chief Operating Officer for claims, Jason Storey, said claims are continuing to be lodged, but the full extent of the damage is yet to be realised. “We’ve been proactively phoning customers in the region all week, to check in and see if they’re okay and assist them with claim lodgement.
‘We understand it can be difficult to know where to start in these circumstances. Our team is standing by to help guide and support customers, particularly with emergent issues like making homes safe and temporary accommodation."
‘We strongly encourage everyone to put their safety first. Listen to instructions from authorities and take care when re-entering your premises, Mr Storey said.
Youi’s Head of Reinsurance, Simone Collins, reiterated the importance for safety. “Customers needing emergency make-safe repairs to prevent further damage or to avoid hazards should contact us. Making a claim as quickly as possible will allow hazards to be contained and the property to be repaired,” Ms Collins said.
Tips for customers:
- Lodge your claim as soon as possible.
- Check all power and gas supplies have been turned off if the property has sustained damage.
- Check for any wildlife which might be camping out in your property.
- Air out your property and keep it as dry as possible.
- Take photos of damage where it is safe to do so.
